merry weekend!

butterfly2in the spirit of christmas, i decided to change out my nose ring to a color that reflects the season, so i now have a green sparkley on the side of my nose.  and no, it does NOT look like snot (for those of you who were wondering).  and for the 1st time in the 11 months since “piercing day”, it totally didn’t hurt to change it out… it’s the little things!

soooooo, we made it through the slumber party.  we played twister, we decorated the cake (graffiti-style- in honor of the local artists who have so diligently displayed their work around the neighborhood), and we watched matilda.  roald dahl is such a great author!  (that was a freebie)  the girls did a FANTASTIC job of decorating the cake… here it is:

thanks girls!!

i also shot some pictures of the christmas tree in my bedroom. i really like the way it looks at night, although it would look a LOT better if my bedroom were a teensy bit larger… if, if, if… anyhoo, here is the view from my bed:

we had a beautiful morning at church- our kids (about 15-20 of them) performed a christmas program, and they rocked!!  i heard little voices singing “go, tell it on the mountain” over and over again.  what a GREAT season!  now i just need to throw some ice out my door! (see the previous post)

merry christmas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

merry christmas, y’all!

butterfly1today i feel so totally red and christmassy.  so i think i will write in red.  what a wonderful christmas season it’s been!!  i’m finished with my shopping, i’m ready for my daughter’s birthday slumber party tomorrow night (comes complete with 7 screaming preteen girls), and i’m looking forward to traveling to ‘bama next week to see my family.

deck the halls with boughs of holly, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la… well, i will spare you the rest.  i LOVE christmas music.  my favorite song  is O Holy Night.  aside from the fact that it is just beautiful, it has the most beautiful origin.  the words were penned by a radical socialist and the music composed for him by a  jewish man.  isn’t it ironic- don’t ya think??  i think that it’s one of the most beautiful songs ever written.  read more here: http://www.erasofelegance.com/arts/music/oholynight.html

another one of my favorite things about the season is the occasional (and i do mean VERY occasional) snow.  last week we had beea-u-ti-ful snow in new O.  of course, today it was in the mid- 70’s and so humid that i have given in to the afro hair i was born with, but last week it SNOWED.  awesome.  my daughter insists that it happened because she threw a handfull of ice out into the yard (her contribution to the water cycle) before school that day.  add a little prayer, and 15 minutes later. voila!  she had her snow- lol.

then there is the christmas candy… divinity, peanut butter balls, fudge, and the list goes on and on.  i have such lovely memories making candy every year with my uncle jack, who went on to be with Jesus 8 years ago.  wow, time really flies.

i love my christmas tree, the presents beneath it, and christmas lights EVERYWHERE.  i would hang my stockings by the chimney with care, but unfortunately i have neither a chimney nor stockings (courtesy of hurricane katrina- but don’t be sad, ms. koester is going to knit some stockings for us).  i love my kids singing in the christmas programs at school and at church, and i love seeing the faces of all the kids singing joy to the world (and to the fishes in the deep blue sea).  what fun!

i really love that Jesus came to the earth in the most humble way to save me.  how beautiful… mary had a little lamb, and Jesus was his name…

monarch migration

butterfly1life is becoming somewhat normal again after my thanksgiving travels.  not only did i go to alabama, but we also (thanks to my preggers sister) spent the ACTUAL holiday with her and hubby in houma, la.  talk about breaking with tradition…  once her pregnancy complication resolved, we had an AWESOME time.  we visited oak alley plantation and it was simply BEEEA-U-TI-FUL!  i wonder who had the foresight 350 years ago to plant those trees?  what a find for the builder of the plantation.  friday we journeyed on to BAMA, where we visited with yet MORE family, and beat some auburn tiger butt.  sooooo satisfying, i must say :) .  even better than that, however, was the taco casa.  for those sad, sad individuals who haven’t experienced the phenomenon that is taco casa (clarification: not to be confused with the chain- the real taco casa is a locally-owned tuscaloosa hot spot), my sympathy is extended toward you and yours.  i ate TWO tacos (yep, 2 baby) and a burrito and topped it off with sweet tea.  it’s like manna… well, maybe that’s a stretch… but it’s quite awesome and likely the reason i gain 3 pounds every time i travel home- lol.

there has been a christmas tree explosion in my home since our return.  one in the den, of course, and one in each bedroom.  it’s quite lovely if i do say so myself.  my goal is to enjoy the heck out of them and take them down before mardi gras.

now, with my blog being titled “butterfly musings”, you would think i would write a little more often about the goings-on in the butterfly world.  i’m so sorry, i think i have done the poor creatures a small amount of disservice.  so, here you go…  i saw a video on yahoo news (that i can’t figure out how to link to) about the monarch butterfly migration to central america that is occurring AS WE SPEAK.  it’s kind of freaky, even for a butterfly lover such as myself, to see thousands upon thousands of them flying in swarms or resting on the tree trunks.  you really just have to see it, so here is a link to another website:  http://mexicolesstraveled.com/monarch.htm

it seems that there are several threats to the monarch migration which could endanger the whole process within the next 10 years.  (you’ll just have to look it up on yahoo news.)  deforestation was one of them, which is unsurprising.  climate change, however, caught me off guard.  is the world getting too hot for the wee little creatures?  NAY i say.  frost, wind, and rains are complicating things a bit.  take THAT you global warming EXPERTS.  pardon me if i don’t jump on the bandwagon just yet… but until it’s too cold or the trees all get chopped down- fly away little butterflies!!
