the green project

butterfly4greetings from nawlins!!!!  just in case you didn’t know (which you probably didn’t, because i haven’t posted in so long), i’m returning from a quickie visit home to alabama.  not only that, i have returned with 20 frozen burritos from TACO CASA.  now, several of my facebook friends have asked 1. what is that? and 2.  how do i get one?  i find it interesting that if someone is really excited about something, soon others will follow- except when applied to yard work.  so, my friends, to answer your questions, taco casa is a local chain found, sadly, only in tuscaloosa, al.  it is owned by a man named rod wilkins, who for some reason refuses to franchise.  if it is about preserving quality, then i’m all for it.  i just wish he would sell the sauce or open a store in new orleans.  otherwise, i’m going to be forced to try and figure out how to make that sauce- or die trying.  sigh… at least one of the stores will freeze my burritos for the drive to nola :) .  taco casa is mexican, kindof… well, it won’t taste like any authentic mexican restaurant like casa garcia or the taqueria that parks in front of lowes (i’m assuming).  they have this amazing vinegar-based sauce that they cook the meat in and then pour more of it on the taco, burrito, enchilada, nachos, etc. of your choice.  so if you are expecting authentic- approach with caution.  i don’t share my burritos with just anyone.  however, if you like things a bit out of the ordinary (tisha), then this could be for you.  anyhoo, since i’m going back to t-town in 2 weeks to shoot a wedding (and get more food from taco casa), i might share a little more freely if you are still interested.  give me a call… you know who you are ;)

now, on another equally-as-important note… many of you know that there is a holiday coming.  since i am of irish heritage (and scottish and english and german and whatever the heck else), i have chosen to celebrate the month of march by challenging myself to a photography assignment- 31 days of greenness: the green project.  green is my favorite color.  my eyes are green, my hair retains vestiges of being green, my butterfly is green, my curtains in my dining room, my plants (well, most of them), and so on and so on.  sooooo, everyday during the month of march (hopefully), there will be a picture of something green.  i promise that i will do my best to NOT have 31 days of green leaves, grass, or ugly green houses (though there will be a couple- you really just have to see them).  i promise that i will do my best- within the scope of my limited ability- to make it somewhat interesting.  maybe at the end we will have a poll for the favorite??  who knows- the sky’s the limit… but unfortunately is blue so there won’t be any pics featuring the sky.  not til blue month rolls around, at any rate.

comments are good.  comments are welcome.  remember, if you want to say something mean and nasty i can always delete it, because I have the power.  so go ahead, tell me what you think.  it makes blogging life fun and rewarding for me.

happy 31 days of greenness!!!

having a baby?

butterfly3got your attention, didn’t i? LOL!!!!  no, i’m not having a baby.  however, my career for the last 11 years, as many of you know, has been to help women give birth… regardless of race, color, national origin, age, disability, and where applicable, sex, marital status, familial status, parental status, religion, sexual orientation, genetic information, political beliefs, reprisal, or because all or a part of an individual’s income is derived from any public assistance program.  (i had to google the civil rights non-discrimination statement, and my, has it grown!!  i can remember when it was only, like, 4 things)  anyhow, i’m sure you get the point… day in, day out- looking at, well, you know- the same thing.  don’t get me wrong, it really is a miracle everytime and i wouldn’t trade it.  God put me in the right place, for sure.  so for tonight’s blog, i wanted to share some insight into the miracle of birth.  i realize that many of you have never witnessed childbirth, but fear not- i’m not about to pull out a home video so that you can see it fo’ real for the 1st time.  however, we were sitting down to watch The Office tonight and saw one of my favorite scenes, and i want to share it with you guys. and yes, we really do get some weird ones.  so sit back and relax… and enjoy the show!!

we are fam-i-ly…

butterfly2i have had an emotionally challenging week… i won’t lie.  i don’t know why or how, but i’ve just been in a bad place.  you know how sometimes you just have to evaluate things and ask yourself the question, “why am i here?”.  i don’t mean why am i in new orleans, or why i work at my job, or why i shop at winn dixie instead of whole foods (although the answer to that probably lies somewhere in the “my job” category).  i guess i’m dealing with the disappointments of the last year or so and trying to figure out what’s next in life.  a pity party, perhaps?  maybe, maybe NOT…

did i mention that i live 300 miles away from my family?  yep, 300 miles.  i know some of you are cheering for me heartily, wishing…nay, PRAYING that you could be so fortunate, but my family is close and it’s hard sometimes dealing with the distance.  don’t get me wrong… i made my peace with it long, long ago, and the distance probably helps us to be closer (if that makes sense- lol).  however, in times like these it would be nice to be around them.

i think that where a void is created, God can always fill it.  sometimes He does it  with only Himself, and that is enough.  but sometimes, He uses others.  in my case, He gave me a “surrogate” family, if you will.  :)   my surrogate family, we’ll call them the “dianne stewart clan” to make life easier, picked up on my mental preoccupations and invited my family to join them for lunch and a birthday party.  i have to say, it was medicine for my soul… not to say that i have the meaning of my life all figured out, but i laughed my head off for most of the afternoon.  let me see if i can re-create the scene for you:  sitting in dianne’s living room with all manner and ages of kids running through from the back of the house to the outside and back again… the smell of uncle byron’s YUMMY roast and gravy, mustard greens, and shrimp pasta… the saint’s b-day cake from haydel’s bakery (although dianne is staunchly NOT a fan of the saints- good job vera)… “happy birthday” sung VERY loudly in about 4 different keys- did you know there are THREE verses?? …a lovely conversation with 4 year old M.J. about Bible man and jamal and the pictures i took of him at school… 2 year old tristen eating cake with his little fingers and presenting them to mommy to wipe between each bite… loud, Loud, LOUD conversation with dianne, her 3 daughters vera, letha, and aisha (and ashton’s girlfriend alexis) about everything from “being ghetto” to being “all about the truth”…  laughter, laughter everywhere…

wow, i needed that.  i appreciate my biological family for showing me what a good family does.  i thank my surrogate family for loving us and taking us in and accepting us as their own.  you don’t know what a blessing you are to me…i love you all, very much.

oh, happy day!!

butterflyi have to say that i feel very good about my day.  after overcoming the nyquil hangover (for the 2nd day in a row), i took the girls  to school and got my day off to a beautiful start by unloading my groceries in a most refreshing downpour of rain- lol.  i rushed through the rest of my morning just to arrive at the one thing i had been waiting to experience all day:

a box? NO, silly! well.. yes, it IS technically a box, but it represents a nikon 5omm f/1.8 af lens (which is mounted on my camera at this very moment, and is responsible for the lovely shallow depth-of-field you see above)! i’m so stinkin’ excited about this lens and i will be more than happy to tell you why…

i have been looking at this particular lens for a few weeks now, because i have a really awesome 18-200m vr zoom lens that doesn’t easily achieve the same effect because it’s smallest aperture (well, largest aperture, smallest number- i don’t really know what to call it)  is only 3.5 .  i know that you don’t want to be bored w/ the minutiae, so i’ll skip to the really cool part of the story…  a friend of mine knew i was looking for one, so she gave me hers!!!  how awesome is that!! so girlfriend, you know who you are and i just want you to know that you’ve blessed me!  (i wonder if this works with houses as well??  in case it does, i would like a 3-4 br, 2 bath house w/ a really large porch and a yard… just in case :)   )

p.s. to my friend who furnished the lens: mo kept begging me to take a picture of her lite brite creation, so here it is:
