24. after a day in the park

butterfly23i think i’m back to green text… i must have been so tired last night when i posted that nothing looked exactly right- lol.  last night was a night to focus on the winner of the green project contest, but tonight i just want to say how proud i am of each and every person who entered their story.  i mean, it takes guts to go out there on a limb and share yourself with the world.  kudos to all of you!!  you are all winners to me… without prizes, however.  don’t worry- there will be more contests in the future and i hope for the same great participation!

today’s pic is one i took after spending a beautiful afternoon in city park.  as you will see, mo is a little tired.  we spent that day climbing trees, climbing jungle gyms, and climbing whatever else we could find that stood upright.  well, i use the term “we” kind of loosely, because i did NOT climb.  i took pictures to document and i helped them down when they realized that it is easier to climb up than to get down.  :)

23. planters

butterfly22i don’t know if i should start with the results of the contest, or give you today’s picture 1st.  it’s so nice to have choices! heck, i think i might just ramble on for a little while just because i have your attention.  is it just me, or does my text look a little blue tonight??  you know, blue is a 4 letter dirty word during the month of march, and i would hate to commit such a terrible faux pas.  oh well, we can’t be perfect all the time!

we had some friends over tonight and had a great time.  we had barbecue (the real kind), and diana made the MOST awesome cherry pineapple dumpcake that i have ever had.  i’m sure she would be happy to post the recipe if you are interested.  sam the chihuahua (of early green project fame) came with his humans, jake and diana, and enjoyed (or not) some quality time with sadie.  add jenny g (jenny from the block, as we like to call her) and our new friend aubrey and you have good times!

is that enough small talk before announcing the contest winner????  ok, here goes… drumroll…………….

the official winner of the green project contest, by popular vote, is… (more drumrolls)

SANTO AND THE ERRANT GOLF SHOT!!!!!!!!!!!

congratulations, santo!!  at the conclusion of the green project, santo gets to choose an enlargement of his favorite green project pic up to a 16 x 20… i might even sign it ;)

today’s picture is the last in a series featuring the green project warehouse in new orleans.  it does feature plants, but i just wanted to share with you how the green project implements its recycling plan.  can anybody guess what the planters are??

22. opportunity knocks?

butterfly21alas, the weekend is almost over and monday is crashing down upon me…  does that sound desperate enough??  i have to say that mondays really don’t bother me so much if i don’t have to go to work- lol.  my kids go back to school and during weather like this, i’m out in my yard.  happy as a lark, although it’s not like i would actually recognize  a lark if i saw one ;)

today was soooooo beautiful.  it was one of those days that appeals to all the senses.  the light was just right, the temperature was just right, the air was clean (for a change), and my flowers are all blooming their happy little butts off.  what more could you ask for?  after a morning at church, we ate lunch at slice (it’s a pizza place on st charles), then spent the rest of the afternoon at miss bernice’s place.  miss bernice is still a character- and we had a great time.  i think it’s quite possible that she makes the best homemade lemonade on the earth :)

so, add an afternoon nap and you have the rest of my day.  thanks for listening…  may all our days be as easygoing, and when they aren’t- hopefully we will remember days like today.

the next couple of days will feature pictures from the green project warehouse.  you have to know that if i named my project after it that i would include a few pics from the store itself.  as i was walking through the doors (the section of doors for sale, that is) there was one standing alone and it had an old door knocker on it with the patina of age quite noticeable.  that’s where you need to look for the green.  if you think that possibly there is not enough green to focus on here, think again. that’s one of the great things about the color green.  it’s confident and doesn’t have to be seen in large amounts or bright, glaring shades to effectively color the world ;) .  i would like to reiterate the fact that i really like doors and windows.  it’s cool to think about the possibilities on the other side.  i mean, who’s gonna answer that door when you bang on the door knocker?  and who has actually banged on it wanting to go inside?  so many questions…

21. the green project, fo’ real

butterfly20good evening everybody!  it’s great to be home after a LONG day at work… i’m sure there are lots of you out there experiencing the same thought at this very moment.  i just want to take a moment to give a shout-out to an “unexpected” reader of butterfly musings.  my mother-in-law’s sister-in-law (chew on that one for a while ;)   ) sent me the nicest message on facebook about how she is enjoying the green project.  so aunt judy, i’m sooooo glad you are enjoying it, and THANK you for your support and encouragement!!!!  i’ll bet i could get some beautiful green pictures up there in washington state… would love to visit with you all!

second order of business, but no less important, is the green project contest.  i checked the poll today and a whopping total of 8 votes have come in.  now, as many of you as there are reading butterfly musings, there should be at least 50 or 60 votes in there.  AND, the vote ends sunday night at midnight.  so, here’s what you do…

step 1.  go to day 5 and read the reader submitted stories in the comments section.

step 2.  go to day 17 and place your carefully thought-out vote.  it counts!!  (apparently more so than your vote for president, mayor, or the best way to bring about the restoration of new orleans or the national economy, for that matter)

whew… finally got the business stuff OUT of the way!  on to more urgent matters- the pic of the day… i want you guys to know where i stole, i mean, came up with the name of my photography project.  here in my neck of the woods is a place  called, yep, the green project.  they take all kinds of stuff like doors and windows from old houses, 100 year-old mantels, paint, you name it- and sell it.  since the logo says “recycle for the arts” i’m assuming that somehow proceeds go to some artsy cause.  anyhoo- you can find some cool things there… especially if you go without specific ideas about what you want.  i took 2 pics- a sign close-up and then a shot of the whole place… so consider tonight a bonus, if you will!!!

20. for sale

butterfly19yesterday, charlie and i were driving down st charles avenue.  he had an opthamologist appointment, and i was in search of more green (which is starting to make me nauseated, i must confess).  i found this nice house just before the intersection of st charles and nashville.  you know all of those red terra cotta tile roofs that you see driving around?  well, i found a green one!!  it was a nice break from the ordinary.  now, for those of you in the market for a home, you are in luck because THIS one is for sale- if you have a couple of million dollars lying around (although my friend charles nobles could surely find a reason NOT to buy it if it were 100k).  it’s ok charles, your house is somewhere out there… isn’t that a song? ;)

19. green beauty?

butterfly18hey… it’s so great to see you all again!!  thanks so much to the THOUSANDS of you who diligently read my blog daily.  well, maybe that is hyperbole, but i’m appreciative all the same that you guys keep coming back day after day after day…

so remember that day that i went threesome bed shopping with chris and kelly?  (it’s really NOT the way it sounds- lol)  we went to ashley furniture on skyland blvd and i saw this really cool fountain in the middle of the store.  it’s green.  and what do i do when i see something cool, exciting, different and green? i run to the truck to get my camera!!!  i wish you could’ve seen the puzzled looks i got from the salesmen.  one of them, brannen, i think??, had  a great conversation with me about doing things simply because you have a passion for them.  his is cutting hair…

the furniture was pretty cool and the salesmen didn’t attack us, so if you are ever in the market for furniture and you are in tuscaloosa at the time, be sure to stop in and visit the ashley furniture store!!  (and THAT is my product endorsement for the month)

18. peep show

butterfly17today’s picture is very eye-opening.  indeed…  in fact, it may not be suitable for some audiences.  i just wanted to give you a heads-up in case you want to sit this one out.  it’s certainly not for those who are easily tempted…  if you still want to see today’s shocking picture, then scroll down…

well, what did you THINK it was going to be??  get your mind out of the gutter, people!!

;)

17. happy st patrick’s day!!

butterfly16what a day!  a day for green, you might say… all day i saw green around me.  all day i thought, dang it- i can’t pinch that person!!  lol… i didn’t even know you could get pinched for not wearing green until a couple of years ago.  whatever-  i have enjoyed the color.

i made it safely home, after what seemed like a forever long but lovely trip to alabama.  it’s so nice to be home… to see my daughters and my hubby.  it’s always good to come back.

i don’t really have a lot to say about the holiday, but i am posting a link here to my husband’s blog, http://graceforneworleans.com/blog/?p=137 .   he does a great job with the history of the holiday and how it can be significant in our own lives.  he’s really good with that kind of thing.  i encourage you STRONGLY to go and read it (after you read my post, of course ;)   )

now, i promised a poll to begin this very day to elect a winner for the green project contest.  let’s see if i can figure that one out:

whew!!  that was hard!!  not really- i did’t have to call jake and diana for instructions- to their relief!!  so, don’t take the attitude of louisiana voters (vote early and often).  please do vote early, but only once!!  results will be announced on sunday, march 22nd.  the winning entry will receive a print, up to a 16 x 20, of their favorite green project picture.  now, i know that to some of you that might not exactly crank your tractor.  so i didn’t tell you guys before because i really wanted your stories.  if it does appeal to you, then go out there and solicit votes (1 each) from your friends.

now, on to the most important part of the day, the picture.  i have been challenged to give you a great st paddy’s pic, and so i came up with the cutest thing in green that i could find…

my favorite!!!

16. the door of opportunity

;) i know you have all been waiting with bated breath for day 16, and after a busy day, i am sooooo ready to give it to you.  i spent the day um, sleeping late (i did take a break to eat some breakfast), eating lunch with kelly and chris, finding even more interesting pictures for the green project, and assisting them in their purchase of a new bed.  why, you might ask, was my assistance necessary?  well, technically it wasn’t, but as i was along for the ride and had an opportunity to offer an opinion on something, i certainly did.

you see, kelly and chris recently had a baby, whose name is spencer.  spencer has sleep apnea, and sometimes sleeps with kelly and chris so they can keep a close eye on him.  they also have a dog, casey, who wanders in and out of their bed as well.  they are feeling a little cramped now in their queen-sized bed (spencer and casey TOGETHER weigh about 20 pounds), and think they need something bigger.  so, off we go shopping for beds.  at the 3rd store, my sister suddenly feels the need to explain to the sales person right away that i am the SISTER and he is HER husband and that i was just hanging out with them.  my brother-in-law laughs, and says that although THEY  are the ones who will make the decision, i will probably put in my 2 cents worth, and frequently at that… you see, it occurred to us after the second store that the sales people were seeing all 3 of us trying out the beds… and they were addressing the 3 of us as customers.  lol… i guess they thought chris must be one heck of a lucky guy!!!!  so we giggled and made jokes and at the third store my sister couldn’t control the explanation spewing forth from her mouth.  so funny!!

if you were hoping that the story of my day ties into the picture of the day, you are going to be woefully disappointed, i’m afraid.  hmm, let me see… nope. i can’t make it work.  i just thought it was funny.   remember that day when charlie and i drove around the 9th ward (where we live) taking pictures?  that’s when i found today’s pic.  i’ve always had a fascination with interesting doors and windows.   i have a small collection of old windows that haven’t quite found a place in my decor, and i have a wrought iron door cemented into my side-yard as a trellis.  i think it’s fun to wonder what could be on the other side.  although i’m not making it a challenge with a prize, maybe you can use your imagination with today’s pic.

15. the view from the top

hey everybody!!!!  it’s so good to be back in the world of high speed internet!!!  you’ll be pleased to know, however, that the dial-up connection at my friend’s house was very reliable, so thanks to that i was able to publish my drafts for the last few days.  we even did a little research into mobile broadband for larry and lori… if it works then we will welcome them into a brave new internet world- lol.

i had a great time with the deavers, and the wedding shoot went well.  we have a week to edit around 600 pictures (my sis runs a tight ship- so don’t mess with her), and i think i will have my fill of wedding photography… at least til the next one ;) .  i’m at my parents’ house in coker til tuesday, and i’m having a great time seeing my family (in-laws included!!!).  to top it off, i ate at (drumroll)… you guessed it- TACO CASA!!!!!!!!!  all in all, a successful day.

i miss my girls.  i talked with them on the phone and they had a fun-filled afternoon playing in the sprinkler.  i’m assuming that it was warmer in new orleans than in coker :) .  anyhoo, i miss them.  they are so cute!  i know- they are a little too old to call cute, but they are.  so tonight’s offering features the place where my girls live.  and what color do you think their room is??  i’ll give you ONE guess- lol.  so here it is,   the view from the top bunk…
